DECORATING WITH DAYBAG

Looking for a cheap and easy way to create your very own no-sew burlap curtains? Burlap curtains can give your home a rustic and inviting feel, and you can create your own in no time at all!

Before you get started, you’ll need to grab a few things: some burlap (about 3 1/2 yards per panel, depending on the size of your window), scissors, pins, an iron, and some stitch witchery.

Grab your burlap and lay it out flat. If your burlap has any wrinkles in the material, you can get rid of them with a steam iron.

Now you’ll want to create a hem by grabbing the end of your burlap and folding it over a length of stitch witchery, making sure to leave enough room for your curtain rod to fit through.

Pin the edges of your fold to help hold the hem for now.

To get your stitch witchery to adhere, use your iron on the hem above the stitch witchery and make a single, slow pass over your hem. If your witchery doesn’t adhere in an area, make another pass over the area.

Repeat this step for the curtain for the other side of the window.

For some additional flair, if you have any matching rope, cloth or twine on hand, you can tie it loosely on each curtain, positioning it where you think it looks best.

Grab your curtain rod and feed it through the hems on both curtains.

Now, the only thing you have left is to do is to put up your newly crafted curtains and marvel at how amazing they look!

HOW TO USE GARDEN TWINE

Gardening twine is one of the most useful tools in a gardener’s tool box. However, newer gardeners might not be aware of the broad uses of twine in a garden. Twine is a durable, light thread made up of two or more strands which are twisted together resulting in increased strength. We’ll cover how someone might use twine to support their plants and what the best practices are for doing so.

Tying and supporting plants is undoubtedly one of the main ways that people use twine in their garden. This can be done in a variety of ways depending on the plants you own. For example, tomato plants grow as vines and, when they bear fruit, the vines can become quite heavy. To maximize growth while keeping the vines from spreading out, many people use a vertical model which incorporates a structural object to make the plant grow upwards. These structural objects can be anything from a few gardening stakes to cages or trellises for more defined shape. In all these cases, twine is useful in helping to secure parts of the plant to your structural object. This helps the plant to grow strong and spread out without drooping, injuring the plant, or invading another plant’s space.

The proper way to tie a plant with twine is not to tie it too tightly. Trunks, stems, and branches of plants will often expand over time, so it is good to not tie your knots to the point of constricting the plant. Use your best judgement on this. The plant should be held primarily by the support item and its own trunk/stem with the twine there to add as an additional cushion to prevent movement. If the plant keeps falling with a loose knot (like in the instance of a vertical stake), you may want more support with an additional stake. Another strategy is to go ahead and tie a tighter knot while keeping an eye on it and loosening the knot as the plant grows, although you should still maintain caution in the amount of force that is being put on the connection point. Fortunately, twine has a good amount of friction, so you shouldn’t have to go too tight for the string to take hold.

Another important way to utilize twine is in the creation of a hanging garden or planter. This usually involves an overhead structure or wall that can be used to hang things from. Using twine, you can hang planters up off the ground to maintain ground space and create an unique aesthetic to wherever these plants are hung. There’s even a traditional Japanese gardening artform dedicated to this idea called Kokedama that allows plants to stay alive after being removed from a pot using the plant’s tightly wound roots and string as the main support for the soil. Furthermore, vine-like plants, such as the aforementioned tomato, can be grown into an overhanging gazebo providing both shade and a nice green space. Solutions for hanging gardens and planters can be found throughout the internet and in different styles, so do more research on the options if you’re interested.

By learning to use twine to tie off and support your plants, you can optimize your garden’s tidiness, help your plants to grow, and can even do fun projects like create a hanging garden. Tying off plants is not the only use for twine in a garden, but it is perhaps the most important. Preventing Weeds With A Burlap Layer

PREVENTING WEEDS WITH A BURLAP LAYER

It’s Springtime again, and that means landscaping and gardening are back in full swing. However, before you lay down new mulch or soil, consider adding extra protection against weeds with a burlap sheet. Weeds can be a nuisance and can get worse as they grow and spread. Mulch and gravel can deter some of the weaker species but they aren’t perfect when it comes to more tenacious plants. A burlap layer can provide a screen that blocks unwanted weeds from robbing the nutrients from your soil. This, in turn, allows your plants to flourish.

“Why burlap?” you might ask. Burlap is a decomposable and inexpensive material made of plant matter. Standard burlap lasts about 7-12 months which means it’ll decompose in just about the same time period that you’d have to worry about weeds. It will also add extra nutrients for your plants in the fall and winter months once it begins disintegrating. Additionally, the weaving of the burlap allows for the free flow of liquids and nutrients, while filtering out unwanted seeds and spores. Together, these factors make burlap an excellent material for the job.

To lay down burlap in your own plant bed, you’ll want to first acquire enough burlap to cover your bed. It’s good to keep in mind though that the more you use, the better protection you’ll have and the less weed pulling you’ll have to do later on. Once you have your burlap rolls and your plants have broken the surface, make sure you have enough depth in your bed so that mulch, soil, or gravel can be laid on top without making the terrain too uneven with the elevation around it. It’s recommended for your bed to be about 3’ deep before adding more material, but you can use your own judgement on this.

Once you have your plant bed ready, you can start unrolling the burlap fabric while making sure to overlap the sheets by about a foot. This overlap prevents weeds from breaking through the cracks between the sheets, and not doing this can create lines of weeds that can be quite annoying. When it comes to avoiding obstacles like your plants, use a utility knife to cut the burlap from the side closest to the plant or obstacle. For thin plants, cut out a slit, while larger plants and rocks require you to either trace out the shape with a knife or create another slit that will allow you to fold the material so that areas around the object are double layered. The same applies for the edges of the flower bed. Folding at the edges helps to keep your bedding in place without exposing any of the burlap.

Once you’ve successfully covered your plant bed with burlap, inspect the layer to make sure that there are no holes. It is not necessary, but it is recommended to utilize specially made metallic pins to pin the fabric in place. This adds additional push against anything that might pop-up and can be useful if your bed is on or near an incline that might make the burlap shift slowly down hill. Once you’re confident that your layer is sturdy and has good coverage, you can now place your mulch or other materials on top of the sheet. Again, make sure there are no holes in this layer as well to make sure the burlap sheet is fully out-of-sight.

And that about covers it. Your burlap layer should go a long way towards preventing weeds further on in the season and will stop them before they even become a problem. This method of weed prevention is an annual process that helps to maintain the health of your soil and ensure as little competition for your plant as possible. Using Burlap To Protect Plants From Wildlife

USING BURLAP TO PROTECT PLANTS FROM WILDLIFE

Gardening is often a disciplined process which requires both hard work and patience before you can see the fruits of your labor. That being said, it can be especially discouraging when an animal decides to turn your hard work into a meal. Rabbits, deer, and groundhogs can be the biggest offenders, but dogs and squirrels have also been known to get into fruits and vegetables as well as leaves and seeds. Regardless of what is nibbling on your plants, you can use burlap to fashion a netting that can protect your garden from hungry wildlife. Burlap is not only an inexpensive and effective material for the job, but it is also green and decomposable.

A good way to go about this is to first create a rectangular frame of 2 by 2 wooden boards around your garden. Make sure to give your plants enough space to grow. Optimally, you don’t want your plants to touch the burlap walls. Research how big your plants might get to determine how best to pad out the distance.

Once the border is in place, construct wooden posts at the corner positions by attaching them to the outside of the base border. The posts should reach at least 2 feet high for smaller critters but should be around 5-7 feet to protect from larger animals like deer and larger dogs. Surprisingly, deer can jump a whopping 8 feet into the air. However, they often won’t if they’re unsure if they’ll make the leap. If you do pick an option that is too high to step over and the gardening space is big enough to walk in, it is recommended to put in a 5th post to act as a supporting beam for a makeshift door. The post should be about 24-34 inches away from one of the corner posts for optimal mobility.

Once the posts are in place, you can now take a roll of burlap and wrap it around the outside of the four posts while stapling the mesh into place. Make sure the burlap is tight against the posts before stapling. Once you’ve covered the entirety of the sides from top to bottom, staple the base so that nothing can get underneath.

If you’re making a door using a 5th post, make sure not to staple the door section to the base. You’ll want the burlap mesh to hang like a flap. One side of the door should be attached while the other side hangs free. From here, you can hammer nails into the post that isn’t yet attached to the door. These will act as hooks to keep the burlap in place when you want the door closed. You can create holes in the burlap by making small slits with a knife and tearing it just enough for the nails to hook through. A hole and nail at the top and bottom of the post should be enough, but feel free to add more.

And there you have it: a fully functional, protective wall against rodents and other animals. Pollinators, sun shine, and rain can easily get in, while ground level animals will be deterred. The process is effective, easy, reusable, and affordable. Most importantly though, you can spend more time enjoying a beautiful garden and less time worrying about animals uprooting your efforts

The Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association has awarded our very own Bob Couch with the Distinguished Contribution Award. The Distinguished Contribution Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the nursery and landscape industries, and we can say that he's certainly earned it. Bob is our Nursery Sales Manager and has been with Dayton Bag & Burlap for the past 42 years.

Throughout his career, Bob has represented us well through his leadership within the horticulture community. Bob was the President of the ONLA Board of Directors in 2006, a member of the Horticulture Research Institute Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2014 -- including taking the mantle as its president throughout 2013, and has been involved with the American Nursery and Landscape Association (now AmericanHort). Bob is also no stranger to winning awards, as he received the Allied Supplier of the Year Award in 2003. He is an exceptional member of his community and loves to get involved at his local church. For the last 8 years he's been leading the church's mission trips.

Across Ohio and the greater U.S., Bob has put his passions for horticulture and community into everything he does. We are proud of his contributions to our field and proud to have him as a member of our team. Congratulations Bob! You deserve it.

Recent Flooding

Heavy rains are headed through the middle of the country right now, bringing with them flash flood watches. The excessive rain can cause a variety of issues from home and business damage, closed schools and farmers not being able to properly work their fields. In severe cases the overflow of local rivers and lakes can also cause streets and cars to be covered with water.

In spite of all the rain, there are a couple ways that companies and farmers can prevent damages from the flooding. One of the best ways to do so is through the use of sandbags. These bags are most commonly made out of burlap or woven polypropylene. Burlap, being made out of grass like plants with fibrous stocks, are very absorbent. Thus, making them very useful when trying to prevent water flow through an area. These natural fibers are both biodegradable and recyclable.

Uses for Sandbags

A large use of burlap bags comes from the agricultural industry. Most farmers use these bags to keep moisture out of their products and in good condition. Due to the abundant amounts of rain, it is vital that farmers have reliable storage for their goods and a way to keep water out of their barns. Since burlap is a strong and inexpensive option for packaging, it makes it a prime commodity for storing and transporting goods.

Construction companies are also large users of sandbags. Here, they use burlap for multiple reasons such as curing concrete, transporting sand and concrete, and keeping water out of certain areas during the construction process. Again, the absorbent material along with the sand inside the bag, catch any water before it can get to a structure. With the large amounts of rainfall that has recently taken place, it is crucial for construction companies to make use of burlap sandbags to protect their structures that may not be fully developed yet.

Due to its durability and strong material, burlap sacks are also used by the military. Filled with sand or soil, these bags are adequate for dispersing energy. Therefore, the bags can absorb the impact of a bullet and even bombs. The bags are also used to keep soldiers dry when they dig trenches or to keep their camps dry when in combat.

How To Winterize Your Yard

HOW TO WINTERIZE YOUR YARD

If you’re worried about how your plants will fare during the coming winter, fear not; there is a simple and effective method of shielding your plants from both the winter winds, and also any foraging animals that may happen across them.

The first thing you’ll need to do is to grab some wooden stakes (three to four should be sufficient), and drive them into the ground around the plant. Next, you’ll want to create a burlap covering that will be large enough to wrap itself around the stakes twice. As you wrap the burlap around the stakes, be sure to move any branches or leaves out of the way to avoid accidental breakage.

Once the burlap is positioned, tie it down with either rope or twine. Be sure not to pull too tightly, as you’ll risk damaging the plant.

Now you’re done and your plants are safe for the coming winter.

FLOOD CONTROL - FLOOD PROTECTION: (PART 3)

Sandbags can be extremely helpful for redirecting floodwater and debris away from an area if used effectively.

When filling sandbags, be sure to only fill them slightly over halfway full, so that they’re at a manageable weight for handling. Sand is a great material for preventing seepage, but if it’s not readily available, silt can be used.

For an even more effective and durable sandbag, mix ten parts of sand with one part of cement. This mixture will create an even better sealant, though it is only effective when used with burlap sandbags.

Fold the top of the sandbag and place it under the sandbag. When placing sandbags, it’s important to place the folded end upstream or uphill to prevent them from opening and spilling.

When placing your sandbags, be sure to only place them two high, unless they’re against a building or structure for support, or if the sandbags are pyramided.

To divert the flow of the flood, place your sandbags parallel to the direction of the flood if possible, to limit the amount of damage to your sandbags and structures behind it.

Keep in mind that sandbags will deteriorate when exposed to continuous wetting and drying. Be sure to properly dispose of any sandbags exposed to flood waters when flooding has stopped.

Flood Barriers - Flood Protection (Part 2)

FLOOD BARRIERS - FLOOD PROTECTION: (PART 2)

Sandbags, when used properly, can be used to build dikes to prevent and reduce flood damages.

The bags can come in several different materials, such as burlap and polypropylene. We sell both types of sandbags—our 14” x 26” sandbags can hold about 42-45 pounds per bag, depending on what material you decide to fill them with.

Sand is definitely the easiest material to use when shaping and filling your sandbags, but if it isn’t readily available, other materials like clay and silt can be used in lieu of sand.

When filling your sandbags, be sure not to overfill them as it will not only hinder the ability to properly stack your sandbags, it will also make them heavier and more difficult to move and arrange. Fill your sandbags only a little over half full for best results.

When choosing an area to build your site, you’ll need to take into consideration the surrounding area. Use natural obstacles to assist in blocking the incoming flow of the flood if at all possible. Also, if the ground is slippery or will result in a loss of friction under your dike, avoid building on that area.

When estimating how many sandbags you’ll need, remember to make the width three times the dike’s height to ensure structural integrity throughout your structure. It’s also good practice to build your dike at least a foot higher than the projected level of the flood, to accommodate for fluctuation in the water level.

When laying your sandbags, make sure that the bags overlap on the next bag in line, and to stagger your lines to decrease the amount of seepage. Also be sure to place your bags parallel to the flow of water.

To seal the dike, lay a large tarp over the front end of your wall with a row of sandbags sealing the bottom, and also the top. Lay your tarp loosely, as the water that hits it will allow the tarp to conform to the shape of the dike, creating a seal in the cracks of the structure.

A dike won’t prevent all of the water from getting through, so be sure to have a sump pump or some other device handy for eliminating anything that does manage to make its way through.

Flood Protection (Part 1)

FLOOD PROTECTION (PART 1)

Flooding can be devastating to homeowners; just a couple of inches of water can lead to tens of thousands of dollars of property damage.

There are ways to help prevent and reduce the amount of water from entering your home from flooding, and luckily, they’re as inexpensive as they are effective.

Sandbags, when used properly, can be a great deterrent against flooding. When filling your sandbags, be sure to only fill them a little over halfway. If they’re overfilled, they may be too heavy to handle.

When placing your sandbags, you’ll want to lay them down like bricks, starting from one end and overlapping them on top of one another. Be sure to stagger your rows so that your bags don’t line up.

In your home, there are several key places that you’ll want to place your sandbags for the greatest protection. You will want to place sandbags over your shower drains, in your sinks and in your toilets to prevent a backflow of contaminated water from entering.

For all doorways, stack sandbags about two rows high (depending on the height of floodwater). If available, lay plastic sheeting down in front of your doorways and place the sandbags on top as an additional sealant.

Make sure you have at least one doorway in your house open if you need to make a quick escape. If it’s an outward facing door, build a semicircle of sandbags around the outside of your doorway so that you can still open it easily.

Additionally, you’ll want to raise any valuables off of the floor to limit damages. Be sure to lift any curtains, rugs or any items in low cupboards. Also, be sure to turn off any power and gas at the mains.

Once the flood has passed, you’ll need to dispose of any sandbags that were in contact with the floodwater. Be sure to wear gloves and any other protection when handling the sandbags—they may have been exposed to chemicals or other harmful contaminants. Be sure to contact your local landfill or other nearby disposal sites for instructions on how to properly dispose of your sandbags.

How To Protect Shrubs and Trees From Winter Damage

HOW TO PROTECT SHRUBS AND TREES FROM WINTER DAMAGE

Likely, you have spent countless hours and dollars perfecting your landscape this year. Taking steps to protect your shrubs and trees from winter damage will not only help protect your investment, but allow your greenery to thrive. Burlap, while having many uses, is a great material to use for winter landscape protection.

Winter Damage

Harsh winter elements can be detrimental to the health of your evergreens by damaging their bark, foliage, branches and roots. Most damage from the cold is normally sustained in early fall and late spring when temperatures drop and there is no snow cover to protect the plant. Sun can also be damaging to your evergreens. Damage from the sun happens when the plant is exposed to direct and powerful sunlight, initiating cambial activity. When the sun is suddenly hidden by clouds, or when the sun sets and freezing temperatures quickly set in, these areas shrubs can be die. Young trees and shrubs are the most susceptible.

The sun and wind can also dry your plants out. Under-hydrated evergreens can lose color, presenting a brownish or bleached look. The combination of intense sunlight and winds causes plants to lose moisture into the air. If too much moisture is lost, it can eventually kill the plant.

Snow, ice and salt can also be harmful to your evergreens during winter. When ice and snow accumulate on a plant, it can sometimes become too heavy, causing the plant to endure broken branches or even uproot. Trees and shrubs that tend to grow close together are even more susceptible, because they offer a wider surface area for snow and ice to accumulate, but lack the strength to support it. The chemical properties in salt can also be very damaging to plants and soil.

Use Burlap To Protect From Winter Elements

Making sure your shrubs and trees are protected for winter can determine whether they survive or not. Burlap is great for winter protection. Wrapping burlap around your trees and shrubs is an effective way to help protect them from the damages of winter. While the weaves of burlap are wide enough to allow the plant to breathe, they are small enough to help keep in moisture and protect the plant from high winds and direct sunlight. If you are unable to directly wrap your trees and shrubs in burlap, burlap windbreaks can also be very useful.

With Summer winding to an end and Fall approaching it's time to consider your trees and shrubs. Have you ever thought perhaps one of your trees would look much better if it were in a different spot in your landscaping? Sometimes trees or shrubs have outgrown their current location and sometimes it would just be better if they were relocated where they would look and grow better.

Like pruning, the best times to transplant trees or shrubs is during the dormant months of the year, generally, spring or fall is best for these activities. In the fall it's best to do any transplanting before the first frost of the year. In the spring the tree will start sprouting in late spring to early summer, you'll want to have the transplant done before that begins.

When transplanting shrubs or trees with the root ball secured in burlap , there are some necessary steps you should take to ensure the health of the plant. This includes evaluating a good planting site, pruning the roots and proper transplanting.

Before you begin the transplanting process, see to it that the future site of the shrub or tree is in good condition. Making sure that the conditions of the site meet the growing requirements of the plant is crucial for optimal plant growth. This means checking growing conditions, light levels, the pH of the soil, drainage and sun exposure. Ensuring the right growing conditions is the first step in successful plant transplanting.

The next important step to take is pruning the roots of the tree or shrub. Since you will be damaging many of the feeder roots during the transplanting process, keep in mind that transplanting is a somewhat risky process. Feeder roots are primarily in charge of absorbing vital nutrients and water needed for growth. In order to reduce plant shock, it is recommended that you prune the roots of the plant several months to a year before transplanting.

By pruning the roots of the tree or shrub, it encourages the plant to generate new feeder roots. The idea is to permit growth of new feeder roots constrained to the area of the future root ball. One thing to keep in mind is that the larger the tree or shrub is, the larger the root ball will be. This means more roots will need to be included in the burlap-covered root ball.

In most cases, root pruning is suggested in the fall, with transplantation being done in the spring. However, this may not always be the case, just be sure utilize the dormant months to fit your schedule and to make transplanting less risky for your trees and shrubs. Doing this will allow new feeder roots to grow in the pruned area over winter without having to aid in new growth. One thing to keep in mind is that larger plants will need a longer period of time to become re-established after transportation.

Before moving the plant, be sure that you dig a hole for it in the new location, digging it deep enough so that the plant will be at the same depth as its current position. Also before moving and prior to wrapping the root ball in burlap , be sure that you thoroughly soak the root ball of the plant to keep the soil together while digging. You will then want to carefully start digging the soil away from the root ball.

Once you have done so wrap the entire root ball in untreated, natural burlap . Using synthetic burlap can cause future problems as it will not rot away and will eventually limit root growth. Make sure the burlap is secured tightly together to keep the roots in place. While using twine to stitch the burlap together is an effective method, incorporating a wire basket or windmill will help ensure that the root ball stays tightly intact during transportation.

Using a cart, burlap, cardboard or another method of your choice, carefully move the plant to the new location. Be very careful to keep the root ball in place. If the soil breaks, so can the roots inside of the root ball, which could cause your tree or shrub to die. This is why using a wire basket or windmill over the burlap covered root ball is a good measure to take to ensure its security. Removing the wire basket , windmill and/or burlap is not necessary. The burlap will eventually disintegrate and new roots will begin to grow through the wire. Once the tree or shrub has been placed in the new hole, cover it with topsoil and finish with 3-4 inches of mulch. Be sure to water frequently throughout the season.

BURLAP WINDBREAK CAN SAVE YOUR LANDSCAPE

The cold season is right around the corner. It is now time to begin thinking about the steps needed to prepare your greenery or nursery to survive. Some of the most damaging elements your plants can endure are cold, dry winds, as well as snow and salt. Protecting them with a screen of burlap to create a windbreak can make a huge difference in their survival. Be prepared for heavy snow and salt. Don't forget about your plants closer to the road, especially evergreens. Using a burlap windbreak can help protect your plants from salt spray and salt runoff, as well as snowdrifts and snow from plows.
Burlap windbreak is also very useful in keeping deer and other pesky animals from getting to your plants and damaging them.
Also, it is a good idea to add a layer of mulch, a few inches thick, to the plant beds to help insulate the roots. This will help relieve the tugging of the roots during the freeze and thaw cycles during winter.

BURLAP: THE HISTORY OF A VERSATILE FABRIC

Burlap is an amazing material. It has many versatile uses, but first let us learn about it's history and what it is.

Burlap is called hessian is many parts of Europe because it was in wide use in Germany at the time it was called "Hesse" and Germans were called Hessians. If you watch old movies about the American Revolution, you might see or hear references to Hessians.

These Germans were a sort of mercenary that fought at the behest of the King of England against the American rebels. Some of these Hessians later stayed in America and helped settle it. George Washington even tried to use propaganda to try to get the Germans to quit fighting the Americans . For more great info on the history of these Hessian soldiers click here.

In any case, those German soldiers couldn't have been too comfortable in their burlap uniforms. Burlap is itchy and scratchy and doesn't make for great clothing. This is why it has been used by some religions, including the Roman Catholic Church in sacrificial rites known as the mortification of the flesh . In this sort of ritual, one is denied pleasures and wears things such as burlap or jute clothing or even hair shirts. Not fun at all.

Burlap owes it's coarseness to the fact that it is made of the skin of the jute plant. Jute is one of the least expensive crops in the whole world. It's also one of the strongest natural materials. The fibers of a jute pland have a high cellulose content and a high lignin content. Cellulose is a large component of plant stalks and ligning is a part of wood. This combination makes jute such a great fiber - sort of a cross between cloth and wood, with the best parts of each: it's strong, durable, resistant to heat and water seepage, and even easy to dye in different colors.

Jute is grown in areas of standing water and for that reason much of it comes from areas like Bangladesh and India because of their heavy monsoon seasons, or otherwise from tropical lowlands where the humidity of around 60%-90%. India makes about 60% of the jute in the world with Bangladesh accounting for most of the rest. Nepal and Myanmar make a much smaller portion of it.

In fact, jute has been a huge part of the culture of Bengal (a region of Bangladesh). During the 1800s and early 1900s, Bengal produced a lot of jute which was primarily taken to the United Kingdom. It was processed in mills there in Dundee, UK. It was first processed by hand into various forms until at one point it was discovered that if treated with whale oil it could be used in textile mills.

The jute industry then boomed, and the profession of Jute Weaver actually existed on the UK census in 1901. Jute was even known as the "Golden Fiber of Bangladesh". The jute trade has declined greatly due to the fact that synthetic fibers started cropping up in the 1970s.

The fibers are actually extracted from the white jute plant or corchorus capsularis and to a lesser extent from the tossa jute. About 2 tons of jute can be grown on a hectare. Interestingly, one hectare of jute can consume about 15 tons of carbon dioxide while creating 11 tons of oxygen per year. (This is a great plant to counteract possible global warming effects.)

Another idea is to make sofa pillows out of them. First wash the burlap bags in baby detergent - this gets the any coffee smell they may have out of them (if buying new from Dayton Bag & Burlap you won't have to do this). Then dry them out and fill them with poly fiberfill. Stich the bags shut and you've got some very attractive burlap pillows !

You could also use burlap coffee bags in your garden. Did you know you can stop weeds with them? They can be used as a weed barrier. To do so, overlap some bags on top of the soil and then put wood chips over them. Eventually the burlap bags will decompose - typically in a couple of years but it depends on the dampness. This will prevent weeds from germinating. You can cut holes for your plants.

Lastly you can make a new raised garden bed without having to dig or build a frame for it. It's a method called sheet mulching and here's how it works. First pick a spot for your raised garden bed. Place pieces of damp cardboard on that spot, then pile two feet of grass clippings, compost, chopped leaves etc. on top of that. Finally put burlap bags on top to sort of hold everything together. Now, after about six months or so everything will have decomposed quite nicely and you'll have a nice new raised garden bed.

BURLAP BAGS / COFFEE BAGS CAN BE USED AS A GARDEN PLANTER

Burlap bags are so handy for many different things, including storing dry goods like coffee beans. In fact, they've become used so much for storing coffee beans that they're actually called coffee bags by many people!

However, coffee bags aren't just for storing coffee beans! Used burlap bags / coffee bags can be used as make-shift pots and look great in your yard, too.

Follow these steps to create your own Coffee Bag Garden Planter

Choose your planter's location (against a tree, shrub or the side of your house or shed) and place the coffee bag there.
Fold / roll down the bag's opening to the height that you want the planter to be. This is great for plants that hang over the edge, because the folded edge isn't as harsh or rough on the plant as other pots or containers.
You'll need to evenly fill the sack with either pre-dampened, all-purpose potting soil, or 1/2 full with garden soil and the rest with potting soil. Because the burlap coffee bag holds in moisture but drains out the excess water, you won't have to worry about the drainage.
Now simply plant your little seedlings like normal and care for them as usual. You can even experiment a little by cutting some slits into the sides of the bag and planting seedlings so they fill out the sides and peak out of the slits.

WHY ARE SANDBAGS MADE OF BURLAP STILL IN USE?

Just about every year we hear about major flooding - both across the country and around the world. It's a fact of life, and a problem that will probably plague humanity for a long as we exist. There's just no way to control the amount of rainfall or the resulting surges of water down our rivers (well, until we master control of the weather at least!).

And while technology has granted us many different advances, the single best tool for defending against flooding is, yep, you guess it - the humble sandbag.

Whatever the type of sandbag (burlap bags, polypropylene bags, acrylic sandbags, what have you) they're all THE tool for the job or emergency flooding management.

Why is this? Why do we still use sandbags?

It's because they're cheap to make, easy to use, weigh very little and are effective. They go back to the Revolutionary War when they were used to build temporary, makeshift forts. It's unclear when the first time sandbags were used to help against rising floodwaters, but they were used in the great flood of the Mississippi River in 1927 .

Sandbags can be shipped in pretty cheaply and by the thousands because they ship unfilled. They're filled on the site of the flooding, or close nearby because they can be pretty heavy when filled, even though it's suggested that you only fill them halfway.

Another benefit is that sand is cheap and easily available in many areas where flooding occurs. The Army Corps of Engineers says that is sand for some reason wasn't available you could also use silt or gravel in an emergency. You could also use dirt or clay, but it's harder to bag up and stack quickly - sand more easily conforms it's shape and lets you stack the bags better.

Whether made of burlap, acrylic, polypropylene or some other material, most sandbags are very good at repelling water. Of course you have to stack them properly, but when done correctly they do a fantastic job of keeping flood waters at bay.

Sandbags are low-tech, and that's a good thing. Some shovels, some manpower and a bunch of bags and sand are all you need. Sometimes low-tech is the best option after all. They're a tool that will most likely be the number one option when floodwaters start rising. Hooray for sandbags!

Sack Races with Burlap Bags

SACK RACES WITH BURLAP BAGS

Burlap bags are great for use in what is called sack races. You may remember this from your youth although it isn't quite as popular as it used to be. Here's all about what sack races are (text taken from our sister site at sackraces.com):

You remember. You stuck your right leg in a burlap bag and your uncle stuck his left leg in the same sack—together you feverishly hopped toward the glory of the finish line at the family reunion. Well the sack race is back!

There are numerous variations to sack racing rules. Here are just a few suggestions for you—but half of the fun of these games is putting your own spin on the rules! So get out there and be creative!

Individual Sack Race:

To play you need one burlap bag for each individual participant. The more people racing, the more fun it is.

Participants will run to the sack, put both feet in and begin hopping toward the finish line.

Contestants must keep both feet in sack and at least one hand on the sack at all times.

The sack must remain as close to the waist as possible and should not fall below the knees.

The first racer to the finish line wins.

Relay Race:

To play you need one burlap bag for each participant or team. The more people racing, the more fun it is.

Each player puts both legs into sack and hops around a cone, or some marked point, and back, tagging the next person in line.

Then, the next person in line gets into the sack and repeats the once-around the cone course.

The first team to the finish line wins.

Note: The relay race can be done with individual participants or two-person teams. The two-person teams can fit both team members in the same sack, or by placing one leg each inside for the “Three-Legged Race.”

Team Sack Race:

To play you need one burlap bag for each team. The more teams racing, the more fun it is.

Start with 10 people per team (or an even number); 5 people on each side of the field (or applicable number if starting with less than 10 per team).

Start the race on one end and have each person tag the next in the other line. Continue until the team finishes.

The first team to the finish line wins.

Note: The team sack race can be done with the “Three-Legged Race” rules, too.

Three-Legged Race:

To play you will need one burlap bag for each two-person team. The more teams racing, the more fun it is.

Participants stand side-by-side and put leg closest to each other in the burlap bag.

Together, they race to the finish line.

The first team to the finish line wins.

Note: The “Three-Legged Race” can be done in relay race form, too.

VARIATIONS:

To add a twist to any of the above races, try some of these variations:

Add obstacles to the course (make sure they are safe, though). Kids love lawn sprinklers as obstacles!

Have different age groups.

HOW TO USE SANDBAGS PART 2 - RINGING BOILS WITH SANDBAGS

The following is from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They have a complete and thorough guide called, Flood Fighting: How To Use Sandbags. They have granted permission for us to post this and we thought it was a VERY informative guide on how to use sandbags (typically burlap bags). So thanks to them for this great information so here's part two:

Ringing boils with Sandbags

A boil is a condition where water is flowing through or under an earth structure (such as a levee) that is retaining water. Free flowing water wants to move to lower elevations. If a levee is stopping floodwaters, the water may be able to find weak points to enter. This action is called "piping". If the water finds a large enough path, the flow will become visible, and is a serious threat to the integrity of the levee. Most boils occur in sand, silt, or some combination.

A boil is found on the landward side of the levee, or in the ground past the levee toe (the exact distance varies with local conditions). Possible boil sites can be identified by free standing or flowing water (other than culverts, pumps, etc). A boil can be found only by close inspection. A prime indicator is water bubbling (or "boiling"), much like a natural spring. Another is obvious water movement in what appears to be standing water.

Carefully examine the water for movement. Boils will have an obvious exit (such as a rodent hole), but the water may be cloudy from siltation, or the hole very small. If there is any movement in the water, carefully approach the site, disturbing the water as little as possible. Let the water settle, and look at the suspected site. If you see the hole, examine it carefully. If the water flow is clear, there are no problems as yet. If there is no distinct hole, the water flow is not a threat. Monitor the site regularly for changes, and take no other actions.

A dirty water flow indicates that the soil is being eroded by the water, and that could mean failure of the levee. A boil ring is the best solution. The idea is to reduce the water flow until the water is flowing clear, but not to stop the water flow. This acts as a relief valve for the water pressure; the water continues to flow, but is not eroding the material. If the water flow is stopped, the pressure will remain, and another boil will form.

Ring the boil with sandbags, with the first bags back 1-2 feet from the boil. More, if the soil is unstable. Build the first layer in a circle, 2-4 bags across, and then build up, bringing each layer in. If possible, keep the interior face straight. Build the ring wall with the means for water to flow out, leaving a gap in the wall, or using pipes. Adjust the flows until the water slows, and becomes clear. Monitor the ring wall constantly. Raise or lower the height of the wall as necessary, maintaining a slow, clear flow.

The height should be only enough to create enough head to slow flow so that no more material is displaced, and the water runs clear.

Notes:

Do not sack a boil which does not put out material.
The entire base should be cleared of debris and scarified.
Tie into the levee if the boil is near a toe.

All joints must be staggered.
Be sure to clear the sand discharge.
Never attempt to completely stop the flow through a boil.

Corps of Engineers Sandbag Policy

Local governments, flood control districts, and other government agencies, are responsible for maintaining a supply of sandbags adequate to cover anticipated emergencies. The Walla Walla District maintains a limited sandbag stockpile to augment local jurisdictions during actual flood emergencies. The Corps will issue only to agencies or governments. Individual citizens requesting sandbags will be directed to their local government.

At the discretion of the District Commander, a portion of the District's stockpile may be loaned to meet a specific local flood emergency. Unused stocks must be returned to Walla Walla District as soon as the emergency is over. Consumed stocks must be replaced in kind, or paid for by the local interests, unless the District Commander has declared a flood emergency for that locality, in which case no reimbursement is necessary.

HOW TO USE BURLAP BAGS TO GROW POTATOES

You can plant potatoes above ground! That's right, using container gardening you can grow potatoesand not have to have a garden. This is great for people with a small amount of space, i.e. if you live in an apartment or house with little to no yard space.

There are many types of container gardening, but you can actually use burlap bags to grow potatoes. A few days after St. Patrick's day is a good time to plant potatoes - you want to soil to be wrokable but not too wet. However, with a burlap bag, you can control the level of wetness.

Types of potatoes to grow

Anything will work for the most part, but buying organic means it won't be treated with bud-inhibitors. You can also buy seed potatoes from local garden stores. You can also use potatoes from your kitchen as well, but you should cut them into smaller pieces. Each piece should have at least one eye.

Then you'll want to cure each of the pieces by putting them in a dark, warm room and let them sit for a couple of days, that way the cut sides can become calloused.

You can also "chit" the potatoes. Put them in an egg carton and put them in a warm, sunny location for a couple of days. Chitting means letting the potato buds sprout indoors before planting them outside - this gives them a little bit of a head start.

How To Use Burlap Bags As Containers

Potatoes aren't that picky about where to grow, although they do prefer rich soil that isn't too wet and cooler weather. You can grow them anywhere: in a raised garden bed, a trench, garbage cans, and yes, burlap bags.

To grow them in burlap bags, just roll the bag down to about 10". Fill it with compost and potting soil to roughly 6" in height. Put about 3 potatoes in each burlap bag with the sprouted eye face up. Cover these with about 2 inches of soil and compost and water it well.

When they're about 6"-8" tall, roll up the burlap bag further and fill in with more compost and soil to about 4". Continue this method until the plant begins to flower. You'll know it's time for harvest when the potato vines start to wither and die off.

You should have some tasty, home-grown potatoes in no time! They'll be tons better than store bought ones. And if you like to grow plants like this, you can use burlap bags for many different types of container gardening.

HOW TO USE SANDBAGS PART 3 - EMERGENCY SANDBAG PLACEMENT

Sandbag placement

Remove any debris from the area where the bags are to be placed.

Fold the open end of the unfilled portion of the bag to form a triangle. If tied bags are used, flatten or flare the tied end.

Place the partially filled bags lengthwise and parallel to the direction of flow, with the open end facing against the water flow. Tuck the flaps under, keeping the unfilled portion under the weight of the sack.

Place succeeding bags on top, offsetting by one-half (1/2) filled length of the previous bag, and stamp into place to eliminate voids, and form a tight seal.

Stagger the joint connections when multiple layers are necessary. For unsupported layers over three (3) courses high, use the pyramid placement method.

Pyramid Placement Method

The pyramid placement is used to increase the height of sandbag protection.

Place the sandbags to form a pyramid by alternating header courses (bags placed crosswise) and stretcher courses (bags placed lengthwise).

Stamp each bag in place, overlap sacks, maintain staggered joint placement, and tuck in any loose ends.

How to fill a sandbag

Filling sandbags is a two-person operation. Both people should be wearing gloves to protect their hands. One member of the team should place the empty bag between or slightly in front of widespread feet with arms extended. The throat of the bag is folded to form a collar, and held with the hands in a position that will enable the other team member to empty a rounded shovel full of material into the open end. The person holding the sack should be standing with knees slightly flexed, and head and face as far away from the shovel as possible.

The shoveler should carefully release the rounded shovel full of soil into the throat of the bag. Haste in this operation can result in undue spillage and added work. The use of safety goggles and gloves is desirable, and sometimes necessary.

Bags should be filled between one-third (1/3) to one-half (1/2) of their capacity. This keeps the bag from getting too heavy, and permits the bags to be stacked with a good seal.

For large scale operations, filling sandbags can be expedited by using bag-holding racks, metal funnels, and power loading equipment. However, the special equipment required is not always available during an emergency.
